Katsumi Oguri completed his Bachelor degree of Arts in Composition at Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music in 1985. In the same year, His orchestral piece "Aiolos" was first performed at an annual recital for newly graduated students of the university.
In 1987, he won third place for his "Zephyrus" from IMC (International Music Council) International Rostrum of Composers. He completed his Master of Arts degree in Composition at Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music in 1988.
In 1992, he won prize for his "Notos" from NIHON KOUKYOUGAKU SINKOU ZAIDAN (the Foundation for Promoting Orchestral Music in Japan). The prize winning piece was broadcasted by NHK-FM.
In 1997, he won prize for his "Destruction" for Orchestra from the Foundation for Promoting Orchestral Music in Japan.
In 2000, he won first place for his viola concerto from 4'th International Composers Competition 2000 " Alberto Ginastera " . This concerto was first performed by Orquesta Filarm—nica de Gran Canaria at Las Palmas in Gran Canaria in 2002.
He also wrote many vocal or choral works and the following pieces were published by Edition ONGAKU NO TOMO:
- "TOKI-NO-MANI" (At pause of time) for mixed chorus and piano
- "My Song of Grief in the Depth of the Night" for mixed chorus and piano
- "Lacrimosa" for mixed chorus and piano
- "MIDORI-NO-CHIHEI" (Green horizon) for mixed chorus
- "HOTARU-WA-HOSHI-NI-NATTA"(The firefly grew up a star) for female chorus
